What does ‘Responsible Sourcing’ Mean to Mars Wrigley?
At Mars Wrigley, we’ve set out an ambition to ‘Reshape the Future of Cocoa’ by creating a modern, inclusive and responsible supply chain.
Through our Responsible Cocoa program, we aim to deliver real, lasting positive change across our cocoa supply chain. To this end, we focus on three core areas that put cocoa farmers, cocoa communities, and the environment at the center of our attention and we are acting to help protect children, preserve forests, and improve farmer income. Our goal is for 100% of our cocoa to be sourced under our Responsible Cocoa program by 2025. Today, we’re proud to say that the cocoa in our Galaxy® Smooth Milk products is 100% responsibly sourced.
We execute our Responsible Cocoa program through our cocoa suppliers, where they work to ensure that the farms supplying our cocoa are receiving the benefits of our Responsible Cocoa program.
When we say ‘100% Responsibly Sourced Cocoa’ in connection with a product, we mean that we have sourced enough cocoa originating from farms benefiting from our Responsible Cocoa program to meet the product’s production needs. This sourcing is done under a widely-used approach called ‘mass balance’.
What is Mass Balance?
We buy cocoa that is independently verified as sourced from Rainforest Alliance Certified* farms for our Galaxy® Smooth Milk products. This helps to satisfy our Responsible Cocoa specifications and benefit farmers in our supply chain.
The Rainforest Alliance works with farmers to help protect the fragile ecosystem that keeps our planet balanced. It lends its seal only to businesses that support its three pillars of sustainability: social, economic and environmental. It is an aim of the Rainforest Alliance to have farm workers benefit from decent wages, safe work conditions, dignified housing, health care and access to education for their children, as well as to learn to control costs, increase production, improve quality, manage their natural resources and protect the environment.
We source cocoa for our Galaxy® Smooth Milk products under the mass balance method of sourcing. Under this method, certified cocoa and non-certified cocoa may be mixed during processing, shipping and manufacturing. While certified cocoa may not necessarily end up in any particular final product, farmers still benefit from our purchase of cocoa originating from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms. We purchase cocoa originating from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms in volumes equivalent to that needed for 100% of our Galaxy® Smooth Milk products.
*We source cocoa under the mass balance method. Find out more about mass balance sourcing at www.ra.org/mb(open in new tab)

Is your packaging recyclable?
The sustainability of our packaging is a nonstop focus and we've set ourselves a target to reach 100% recyclability of our packaging by 2025. It's a big challenge and so we're working with a variety of partners and organisations to help move things forward.
Do your products contain allergens?
We take consumer safety seriously and understand that people with food allergies have to be very careful about what they eat. We put allergen information on our packs in line with regulations and highlight the allergens in bold text to help people easily identify ingredients or potential allergen cross-contamination risks.
We know that if you have an acute allergy, you might want more details than the allergen labelling we legally provide. It's possible that over time, small changes can be made to our ingredients or processes that wouldn't change the information we display on pack by law but which could alter any more specific guidance we give. We recognise the potentially serious consequences of someone eating a food that they are allergic to and can therefore only stand by the information displayed on back of pack.

Our campaign ‘Making chocolate better, one piece at a time’ is not just about how wonderfully delicious these Galaxy® Smooth Milk products are, but also a representation of our enduring commitment to meaningfully improving the lives of cocoa farmers. We think Galaxy® Smooth Milk products taste better, because they are made better. And that starts with cocoa growing communities. Without whom, we wouldn’t be able to make the millions of indulgently creamy Galaxy® bars that are enjoyed by the nation every single year. While we’ve made significant progress to date and have made a real difference to thousands of cocoa farmers and their families across the globe, this campaign, as well as serving as a recognition of cocoa communities, is transparent in saying that we know that there is more work to be done. At Mars Wrigley we are committed to creating a more modern, inclusive, and responsible cocoa supply chain for future generations. We continuously strive to create a cocoa supply chain where human rights are respected, the environment is protected, and cocoa farmers have the opportunity to thrive.
What do you do to tackle deforestation?
At Mars, we’re not just committed to our consumers, we’re also focused on positively impacting people and the planet. Preserving forests is one of three areas for priority action in our Responsible Cocoa program as part of our Cocoa for Generations strategy. We want to help farmers grow more cocoa on existing farmland without expanding into new areas.
Our ambition is to achieve a deforestation-free supply chain for all the cocoa we source by 2025.
Protecting the forest requires support and action from all in the cocoa supply chain and we therefore buy cocoa that is independently verified as sourced from Rainforest Alliance(open in new tab) Certified* farms.
How do you support women in cocoa communities?
We have implemented several impactful programs over the years – one we’re proudest of is our work with CARE to help women in cocoa growing communities achieve financial independence through training and village savings and loans programs. To date, we have helped over 24,000 cocoa community members of which nearly 18,000 are women, in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana. In 2020, we enhanced our five-year collaboration with CARE with an additional investment of $10 million USD, with a new goal to reach more than 60,000 people in cocoa communities in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana by 2025.
How do you support children in cocoa communities?
ICI research(open in new tab) has shown that child labor decreases as educational quality improves. That’s one of the reasons why we work with the Jacobs Foundation and others with the aim of collectively providing access to quality primary education for 5 million children in Côte d'Ivoire.
Our comprehensive Protecting Children Action plan can be viewed here(open in new tab)
How do you measure progress and impact?
Understanding impact takes time. We have a number of internal and third-party measures linked to our Responsible Cocoa program, including our commitment to purchase cocoa originating from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms in volumes equivalent to that needed for our products bearing the Rainforest Alliance seal.
What role do your partnerships play?
Multi-stakeholder collaboration is essential to scale and sustain impact. Only by increasing the cohesion across business, government and civil society groups, will we be able to reach our common goal of ensuring human rights are respected in cocoa communities so that children can grow, play and develop in a healthy and safe environment and cocoa families can thrive. See a list of our partners here (opens in new window).
How much money are you investing in cocoa sustainability?
Our Cocoa for Generations(open in new tab) plan is backed by an investment of $1 billion over 10 years (2018-2028).
What are the key challenges the cocoa industry face? And why haven’t they been solved yet?
For Mars, confronting the challenges posed by cocoa supply means continuing our journey to work towards protecting children, preserving forests and improving farmer income, including improving farming productivity, diversifying the income of cocoa farmers and empowering women and communities.
We’ve made progress on our journey to tackle the environmental and social challenges facing the cocoa sector but recognize that there is more to do. We launched our Cocoa for Generations(open in new tab) strategy in 2018 with an ambition to ensure all of our cocoa is sourced under our Responsible Cocoa program(open in new tab) by 2025.
